Programme profile

Massive amounts of data containing valuable information are produced every day. Developments such as the internet of things, Industry 4.0 and social media, ever-increasing storage capacities and the growth in cloud-based processing power mean that we currently generate around 5 zettabytes (5 billion terabytes) of data a year – and this is growing exponentially. But how is it possible to filter out the useful information from this flood of often unstructured data? The answer is data scientists – who have a job that Harvard Business Review described as the “sexiest” of the 21st century.

Data scientists and business data analysts play a part in corporate and organisational decision-making by analysing data and visualising the results

Programme content

In this programme, students build on their knowledge in the core subjects of maths, statistics (Mathematics and Statistics) and programming (Programming), and learn to apply data analysis and data management tools and methods (Data Generation, Data Analysis, and Data Management) as well as visualise data for different users (Data Visualisation).

This is accompanied by courses in the fundamentals of business and economics, law (Business, Economics and Law) and soft skills (Social Skills, Methods and Tools). Projects implemented with companies from a variety of sectors are designed to give students an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired. The programme comprises an internship in the fifth semester, which can be completed in Austria or abroad.
